A change in how stays are discovered
The listing still matters. Discovery now travels further.
Short-form video is becoming a practical way to help travelers understand a property quickly, while social channels and independent websites give hosts more places to build recognition beyond a marketplace search result.
01 · PLATFORM SIGNALSVideo and social sharing are entering the host toolkit.
Vrbo's official video guidance says video can help travelers understand a property and the stay they can expect. It prefers portrait, mobile-friendly video, accepts 9:16 and 16:9, and recommends keeping videos under 60 seconds.
Airbnb's guidance is narrower: it tells hosts to share listings on social media and offers tools to embed a listing preview on a website. It does not make the same explicit short-video recommendation, but it recognizes discovery beyond Airbnb search.
02 · THE DIRECT-BOOKING GAPOwning the website is not the same as owning attention.
For hosts seeking more control over platform fees, guest relationships and their brand, an independent booking site can be an important step. It also means competing without all of a marketplace's built-in discovery, reviews, familiarity and booking convenience.
A website alone does not close that trust gap. Consistent social content can help guests recognize the property, understand the people behind it and arrive at the direct site already familiar with the brand.
